Shamena is Stronger than Breast Cancer with Memorial on Her Side

After detecting an abnormality in her breast, Shamena went to Memorial where she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. Her treatment included chemotherapy, which successfully treated the tumor.

With guidance and support from her multidisciplinary breast cancer care team, including breast surgical oncologist, Dr. Heather Wright, Shamena decided to undergo a bilateral mastectomy and reconstructive surgery at Memorial Breast Cancer Center. There has been no sign of cancer during her recovery. With the Memorial team on her side, Shamena was stronger than breast cancer. Memorial Breast Care Services: Diagnostic vs. Screening Mammograms

Juliana Rosenblat, MD, Breast Imaging Radiologist, explains the difference between diagnostic and screening mammograms, both are essentially X-rays. A screening mammogram is an initial, general screening to detect breast cancer. It is recommended that women have a screening mammogram regularly beginning at age 40. A diagnostic mammogram is conducted when breast cancer symptoms are present or if something that may indicate cancer is seen during a screening mammogram.

Do I need a diagnostic or screening exam
  • Screening mammograms are regular preventive x-ray exams of the breasts to detect breast cancer in women who have no symptoms.
  • Breast Ultrasound is a non-invasive test that uses sound waves to make images of the breast. Often it's used as a follow-up test after an abnormal finding on a mammogram, breast MRI or clinical breast exam.
  • Diagnostic mammograms are used after suspicious results on a screening mammogram, or if some abnormal signs are found by you or your physician during a routine exam, to provide a more detailed x-ray of the breast using specialized techniques. Also, women prevously treated for breast cancer may get a diagnostic exam. Results will be given prior to leaving the center.
