Awake Brain Surgery at Memorial Neuroscience Institute

Brandon J. Davis, MD, Neurosurgeon, and Madiley Broz, PsyD, Neuropsychologist, explain awake brain surgery at Memorial Neuroscience.

Awake brain surgery is a special type of craniotomy performed when a tumor or a lesion is located in very sensitive areas of the brain. Initially sedated, the patient is awakened during surgery in order to provide feedback that helps guide the neurosurgeon during the procedure.

Byron, who had a brain cancer tumor shares some of what he experienced during his awake brain surgery procedure.

  • Surgical excellence: From spine conditions to epilepsy, movement disorders and brain tumors, our fellowship-trained surgeons offer specialized, high-quality care. Meet our team
  • Advanced technology: We offer leading-edge technologies that aren’t widely available in the region. Examples include NeuroPace for epilepsy and deep brain stimulation for movement disorders. Our spine surgeons also use innovative tools to guide surgery and prevent spinal cord injury.
  • Minimally invasive procedures: When possible, we perform minimally invasive neurosurgery. This approach provides several benefits, including less pain, fewer complications and a faster recovery.
  • Personalized care: We believe care should be based on you, not just your diagnosis. Our surgeons value your input and work to develop a treatment plan to best meet your needs.
  • Collaborative treatment planning: Our neurosurgeons meet routinely to discuss complex cases and treatment plans. This collaboration helps us establish the most appropriate surgical strategy.
  • Care coordination: When undergoing some types of surgery, you have a patient navigator who serves as a single point of contact. Patient navigators guide you through surgery and follow-up care and are available to answer any questions.
